About me – and why I teach

Statement of Philosophy of Education: Philosophy of Education

I am currently a Math & Science teacher at Place Cartier Adult Education Center in Montreal Quebec, and a fourth year student at McGill University in the Education for Secondary Science and technology program. I was born in Toronto, Canada, and lived there until I was seven years old, before moving to Montreal, where I currently live. I have always enjoyed learning new things about the natural world and how it functions, and I also possess a passion for sharing this with others. Naturally, this is what led me to pursuing a career as a science teacher.

In my spare time, I enjoy furthering my knowledge of science, particularly in astrophysics and biology, spending time with friends, keeping active, and travelling, latest to Buffalo to watch a football game. Needless to say, students love when they can relate the material they are learning to things they enjoy, and I often try to do this with sports, pop culture, and new scientific endeavors and discoveries.

During my tenure as a teacher as a teacher in adult education, beginning in May 2017, the most rewarding part has been to help my students reach their goals on the new path they have chosen, and giving those who have not had a successful academic career in the past a second chance. Although the opportunities to mold students as individuals are fewer in adult education, a teacher can still have an enormous impact in their lives, for which the students are grateful. Despite beginning my career at 21 years old, I have demonstrated than I am capable of assuming the responsibilities of a full-time teacher, and learn by reflecting on my practical experience.

Over the course of my time at McGill, I have taken many steps to further my skills as an educator, outside of the requirements of my degree. This included teaching financial literacy courses with the PennyDrops program bi-weekly at Westmount High School and Options High School in Montreal. Additionally, I have worked as a tutor both privately and for the tutoring agency Gradeslam from 2014 to 2017. I have also gained valuable experience working with children in the summers of 2015 & 2016 at camps. I saw a stark contrast between the two camps I worked at. The children who attended the first camp I worked at were mainly from well-off families, whereas the ones from the second were foster children, generally with academic and/or social issues. Although the experiences were extremely different , this time working with children in and outside of the classroom has not only taught me strategies to work effectively with different types of youth while all while honing my teaching skills.

Teaching appeals to me because it is a constant challenge that no one can fully master. Challenging myself to improve is a characteristic I possess to a fault, and I aim to continue developing my skills for years to come.
